Yesterday Lives – Chapter 14

The next morning, Ayo woke up with a spring in his steps. He was unusually happy and Kevwe noticed. She sneered as she looked at him. “You win jackpot for your dream?”

Ayo smiled. Ngozi may not be a jackpot but seeing her again after many months definitely made his heart flip like he had won a lottery. He took a bucket to the bathroom to have his bath and was done in a hurry. He dashed to the kitchen and picked out their stove from a corner. He lighted it and put some rice on fire, while he strolled to the room to get dressed. Kevwe lay on the bed as she watched the small TV in the room. She was very heavy and her tummy looked like she could pop anytime soon. When the rice was cooked, Ayo carried it from the kitchen and placed it on a stool in the room.

“I have cooked rice for you to eat when you are hungry.” He said as he dished some into a plate for himself. He opened the pot of stew he had cooked the previous evening and served himself a piece of meat. He was not ready to waste money buying food at the office so he ensured he ate every morning before leaving home. He gulped a cup of water, stood up and tucked in his shirt.

As he stepped out, he looked at Kevwe. “Please make sure you rest and eat well ehn.”

Kevwe looked at him. “I don hear.”

Ayo took out his phone from his pocket as he stepped out of the house. He placed a call to Ngozi. She picked up on the third ring.

“Hey!” Ayo said.

“Hi.”

“Are you out of the house yet?”

“Yes, I am on my way to drop the kids off at school.”

“Okay then. I’m on my way to the hotel.”

“That’s fine. Just wait for me at the reception once you get there.”

“Okay.”

As Ayo dropped the call, he placed another call.

“Chima…..” He said as he coughed. “I can’t come to work today. I am not feeling fine. Please help me tell HRM.”

“Okay.” Chima said. “Are you going to the hospital?”

“Maybe later.” Ayo coughed again.

“Sorry ehn. I will let HRM know. Just rest well.”

“Hmmm…..” Ayo grunted as he ended the call. With that done, he looked for a bus going towards the direction of the hotel on the other side of town.

Ayo arrived at the hotel about an hour later. He made a beeline for the restroom and washed the sweat off his face. He opened his wallet and took out a mini perfume. He opened it, turned it a little towards his forefinger and placed it on his neck and behind his ears. He took out a pack of menthos he had bought in traffic from his pocket and popped two into his mouth. He looked at himself in the mirror before walking out to wait at the reception.

Ngozi sauntered in a few minutes after. She spotted Ayo immediately and walked towards him. Ayo stood up and hugged her.

“You look good. How are you doing?”

Ngozi shrugged. “I have been managing.”

“You are booking a room now till evening?”

“Yes.” Ngozi said as she turned towards the reception desk.

Ayo walked behind her.

Ngozi made the booking and the payment.

“Let’s go to the car.” She said as she held Ayo by the hand.

They both walked outside; Ngozi taking the lead.

“After you left, the whole family moved in that same day. They made life unbearable for me. There was nothing I ever did that was right in mama’s eyes. I was frustrated but I had to keep on because of the kids.” Ngozi said as they got to the car and she opened the boot.

Ayo pulled out the hand luggage and rolled it. “I’m so sorry.” He said.

Ngozi smiled and shrugged. “There is no need to be. It all ends today.”

They walked back into the hotel lobby and Ngozi collected her room key. They took the elevator to the 15th floor and located the room. Ngozi swiped the key on the door knob and it opened. She walked in and held the door for Ayo before locking it. She placed the key on the light switch and the lights and the air-conditioner powered on.

Ayo rolled the luggage beside the bed and sat on the couch. “How did you pull this off without them knowing?”

Ngozi shrugged. “We don’t talk to each other at home. We live like strangers in the house. I don’t allow anyone of them into my bedroom; so I had packed up a few things I felt we would need. A change of clothes for the girls when they get back from school and all our travel documents. Most of them were still in bed when I left home. Only the maids were awake. I got the kids ready for school myself and loaded the luggage into the boot.”

“Hmmm……” Ayo grunted. “And Dubem?”

“Ebuka sacked him and recruited someone else.”

“Ahn…ahn… what is wrong with these people? What did he do wrong?” Ayo asked with a puzzled look.

“I have no idea but by now, you should know they are capable of anything evil.”

Ngozi walked to the couch and knelt before Ayo. “I am both excited and sad.”

“Excited, yes but sad, why?”

“I am going to miss you a lot.” Ngozi smiled sadly.

Ayo laughed. “We haven’t seen each other for months and you survived.”

“I know but do you know how difficult those months were for me. Do you know how many times I almost called you just to hear your voice? Do you know how many times I wanted you to tell me that everything would be alright?”

“I’m sorry.” Ayo sighed.

Ngozi nodded. “I know.” She moved closer to Ayo and kissed him gently.

Ayo took a deep breath as he held her. He had also missed her but after the last encounter with Kevwe, he had thought it wise to stay away.

Ngozi eased away and looked at Ayo as she touched his chin tenderly. “I love you Ayo.”

Ayo smiled. “I always did.” He pulled her up as he stood and hugged her. “You mean so much to me Ngozi. I wish we did not have to part this way….” He said as he took a deep breath. “…. but it is for the best.”

Ngozi pulled out of his embrace and looked at him. There were tears in her eyes. “I feel the same way.”

“You have to stay strong.” Ayo said as he wiped the tears that were now spilling on her cheeks. “I know you are strong and you have proved it; remain strong for the sake of the girls.”

“I will.” Ngozi said as the tears rolled down her cheeks in streams.

Ayo pulled her close as he kissed her tenderly. Ngozi responded allowing him to kiss away her tears and her fears of the future. Months away from each other rekindled the passion burning between them and they let themselves loose without inhibitions. Every touch, every kiss and every caress made by Ayo was intentional to drive Ngozi to the highest point of ecstasy. This was their last rendezvous together and he wanted it to be memorable; both for him and for Ngozi.

Ngozi’s body burned. It had been months since she had been touched and Ayo was driving her crazy. He knew exactly what to do, where to touch and what to say as he whispered sweet words into her ears. Ayo continued to build up the fire in her igniting her body till she screamed in surrender. Moments later as their intertwined bodies danced to the rhythm of their voices, the future did not matter to them, the pleasure of the moment was enough.

******

Later that evening, Ngozi and the girls eased into a taxi they ordered and headed for the airport. Ngozi’s car had been picked up hours earlier. She had insisted on getting to the bank and confirming that her account had been credited before releasing the originals of her car documents and the car key. Once it had been confirmed, she handed the car documents, the change of ownership and the key to the buyer within the bank premises. He was free to pick up the car from the hotel.

END OF PART 1

Blind Pact – Chapter 5

School closes a few weeks later and Bola leaves for home on a Friday. Her mum is delighted to see her when she gets back from work in the evening. Since Bola has her own key to the house, she had let herself in earlier in the day and prepared dinner for her mum. They both sit at the dining table and talk about school, work and other matters. After clearing out the dishes and the kitchen, Bola retires to bed and decides to call Gboyega. It has been a week since she last heard from him and she was beginning to get worried.

“Hi”. She says as he picks up on the first ring.

“Hey you. How are you doing?”

“I’m good. I was wondering why I had not heard from you in a while.”

“I’m sorry. I have actually been busy.” Gboyega apologizes.

“Wow! Too busy to talk to a friend?”

“No way! I apologize.”

Bola smiles. “Hmm, so what have you been up to?”

The door to Bola’s room opens and her mum peeps in. She sees her talking on the phone and turns back.

“Trying to raise chicks.”

“What?”

Gboyega laughs. “You heard me right. I bought a few chicks and have been breeding them. Something to keep me busy till I go for my NYSC orientation programme.”

“That’s nice.”

“I need to start making money so you can take me serious.” Gboyega teases.

“Serious?”

“Yes, Bola. Serious about dating you.”

Bola exhales. She stands up from her bed and walks towards her reading table. She picks up his graduation picture and goes back to lie on her bed.

“Bola, are you still there?” Gboyega asks as she has been quiet for too long.

“Yes, I am.”

“The only picture I have of you is the one from my graduation. But your face is ingrained in my memory. And the truth is, I’m in love with you. I remember our gists, our bible sessions and the look on your face when you pretend to be angry.” He laughs.

Bola takes a deep breath.

“Please give me a chance.” He pleads.

“Can we talk about this some other time?”

“Bola, you keep on pushing this. Are you scared that I will hurt you?”

“I really can’t talk about this right now.”

“Okay. If you say so. It’s late. You should go to bed now.” Gboyega concludes.

Even though Bola still wishes they could talk some more, she willingly accepts to end the call. “Good night Gboyega.”

“Good night Bola. I love you.”

*********

The next day, Bola is up early. She goes to the kitchen to make breakfast for herself and her mum. She sets the table for two and calls on her mum when she is through.

As Banke walks towards the dining table, Bola kneels to greet her. “Good morning, mum.”

“Good morning, darling. You are up pretty early.” Banke says hugging her daughter.

“Yes, mum. I wake up early to read. Since I’m home and not reading, I decided to make breakfast.”

They both sit at the table to eat.

“So, who’s the young man you were chatting with last night?” Banke asks.

blind-pact-5

Bola looks at her mum from the corner of her eyes. “Mum? Were you eavesdropping on my conversation?”

Banke puts her hand on her chest faking a hurt. “Eavesdropping on you? Why would I?”

“Just asking.”

“You haven’t answered my question.” Banke says as she butters a slice of bread.

“He’s just a friend.” Bola says without looking at her mum.

“Hmm, just a friend.”

“Yes mum. Just a friend.” Bola emphasizes.

“It did not seem like you were talking to just a friend.” Her mum says eyeing her.

Bola looks up at her mum.

“You were all smiles. And even giggling.”

“Mummy?”

Banke raises up her hands and nods. “Okay, okay. He’s just a friend.”

Throughout Bola’s vacation, she and Gboyega keep in touch calling each other every other day. Bola steers clear of discussions relating to dating or relationships. Anytime, Gboyega brings it up, she immediately changes the topic of discussion. In a few weeks, she is back to school and Gboyega also prepares to go for his National Youth Service Orientation Programme.

Three weeks later, Gboyega returns from Ogun state after a grueling orientation programme. He drops his travel bag at home and takes a quick shower. He knows he should wait till the next day before embarking on a trip to Akure, but he has missed Bola so much that he would rather see her today. He gets to the bus garage at about noon. In five hours, all things being equal, he should be in Akure.

Bola is walking towards her hostel when she sees a silhouette like Gboyega’s from afar. She stops and squints. No, it must be my imagination. What would Gboyega be doing in Akure at this time of the evening? She turns back and begins to walk away. She gets to her room and meet her roommates all crouched on a bed watching a movie on a laptop. They look up briefly from their movie to acknowledge her presence. She lies on her bed and faces the wall. The person she saw from afar has brought thoughts of Gboyega and she realizes that she misses him. They haven’t spoken in a week now. He was supposed to be through with his National Youth Service Orientation Programme. She knows she should call him at least to find out how he is doing but she does not want to. She does not trust her feelings any longer.

She is lost in her own world and does not hear the door open. Her roommate taps her and as she turns her head, she sees Gboyega standing before her. Her jaw drops as she rubs her eyes to be sure she is not dreaming. He smiles at her and takes her hand. She lifts herself from the bed and instinctively hugs him. Gboyega leads her out of the room before her roommates decide to have a field day feasting on them.

“You looked like you saw a ghost in there.” Gboyega says laughing.

“I thought I saw someone that looked like you earlier on campus. I imagined my mind was playing tricks on me.”

“I would take that to mean you missed me.”

“Well, I think I did.” Bola smiles.

“You think? You are not sure?” Gboyega teases her.

Bola hits him playfully. “Hey, stop! Whatever!”

They walk towards the campus gate.

Bola looks at her wristwatch. It is almost 5.00pm. “When did you come back from camp? I hope you ain’t going back to Lagos today.”

“I came back today. And I am going back to Lagos today.”

Bola stops walking. “But it is late.”

“I know. I just had to see you today. Now, that I have, I can have a good night’s sleep.”

Bola blushes. “Gboyega, you could have waited till tomorrow. Now, that you are here, why don’t you sleep with a friend in the hostel.”

“Nah, I don’t want to inconvenience anyone.” He says shaking his head.

“Please?”

Gboyega winks at her as he smiles. “Under one condition?”

“And that is?”

“I get to see you before I leave for Lagos tomorrow.”

Bola smiles. “Definitely.”

Bola sees Gboyega off to the bus garage the next morning. Before he leaves, he asks her one more time if she has given their relationship a thought. She shakes her head. She tells him that she loves the relationship they have together now. She does not want to get her heart involved. Gboyega holds her hands as they sit in a corner at the garage. “Bola, I love you. Don’t you understand?”

“Please give me more time. I am scared of getting into a relationship.”

“I would never hurt you, Bola. You have given me a reason to look to the future.” Gboyega says.

Bola sighs. “Give me some time, please.”

“Okay. I will.” He says. He wonders how long he would have to wait but he will, if that is what it takes.

Second Chances – Episode 10

Kunbi and Sola walk into Wale’s apartment. Kunbi slumps into the settee while Sola sits gently by her side.

“Home sweet home. I couldn’t wait to get home from that maddening crowd at the airport. Oh God! I’m so tired and tomorrow starts another working week”. She says yawning. “I wish the weekend could go on and on”. She notices Sola is quiet and looks at him with surprise. “Helloooooo”. She stresses. “What’s wrong? Why are you so quiet?” She says nudging him.

“I’ve been thinking”.

“About what?”

“It’s nice to know someone cares so much about you”.

“Are you talking about Wales and I?” Kunbi asks smiling.

Sola turns to look at her. “Of course and frankly speaking, I’m getting jealous”.

“Oh dear. Jealous? Why?”

“You won’t understand”. Sola says as he takes a deep breath.

“I know you are finding it difficult to fathom what happened between you and your girlfriend but you have to get over it. Life has to go on”.

“Yeah, I know. I guess I was expecting too much”. He says looking morose.

“No, you weren’t”.

“Love sure hurts”.

Kunbi smiles as she holds his right hand and pats it. “It does sometimes. Take heart, you’ll meet your heartbeat at the right time”.

“I wish it were that easy”.

“It will be if you take things easily”.

Sola looks straight into her eyes. “Kunbi, I need you”.

She removes her hands from his and looks away. “Sola, we have talked about this before”.

“Yes, we have. But I never stopped loving you”.

Kunbi’s heart begins to beat faster. He just said he loves me. Oh Lord! My heart is already broken. I can’t handle this. “We can’t go through this again”. She says stalling her thoughts. “Besides, I don’t think this is the right time. We are both hurting”.

He turns her face to look at him. “I am ready to wait till you are ready”. He stands up and shrugs. “I should go home now”.

Kunbi keeps her head bowed and is unable to look at him. She cannot deny her love for him but she is confused. Deep down her heart, she still loves Ola, regardless of all he has done. She knows she should move on but her heart has refused to do so.

As Sola walks out of the house closing the door behind him, hot tears roll down Kunbi’s cheeks. “Why is love so complicated? I love Sola but I am scared of his non-commitment. And I still can’t get Ola out of my mind”. She decides to retire to bed and does so dreaming about Sola and what could have been between them.

2nd Chances 10

*********************************************************************************

Sola picks up Kunbi from work every day and drops her home as promised. He also takes her for lunch as usual. He, however, keeps their conversations very simple and avoids getting intimate. Kunbi misses their intimate conversations but refuses to say anything about it. She knows Sola is still hurt but she is helpless.

Wale arrives from his trip a week later as planned and decides to take a taxi home from the airport. He expects to see Sola in his apartment but is surprised that Kunbi is home alone. He drops his luggage in his room and has a quick bath.

“I was expecting to meet Sola here”. He says walking into the living room and eyeing Kunbi as she hands him a glass of juice.

“Why?”

He shrugs. “He ain’t dating any longer, so I just felt you guys would keep each other company”.

“He obviously told you about the incident between himself and Tolu”.

“Yeah, we talked on the phone while I was in Abuja. I wanted to check up on you, so I called him”.

She looks at him with surprise. “You wanted to check up on me and decided to call Sola?”

“Yeah, you would have told me you were fine. But Sola, would have told me if there were any issues. It only made sense to call him”.

She sighs. “Wales, can I ask you something?”

“Shoot”.

“Erm….I don’t know how to ask this”. She breathes deeply. “Are you aware of Sola’s non-commitment to relationships?”

“Hmmm….no, I am not aware but I don’t think he has such intentions with you”.

“Why do I feel like I am the only one in the dark?”

“How do you mean?”

“Did Sola discuss me with you?”

Wale smiles. “Sola had made his intentions known to me from the beginning but you were too preoccupied with Ola to notice that he likes you”.

“I still love Ola”. Kunbi says looking away.

“Obviously”. He says wrinkling his nose. “I can’t help but wonder what hold the guy has over you. C’mon, when are you going to open your eyes and see?”

Kunbi moves towards him and picks up the empty glass. She goes to the kitchen refusing to respond to Wale.

********************************************************************************

During one of Sola and Kunbi’s lunch breaks together the following week, she is chatting with Sola when she receives a text message. She looks at the sender and instantly hides her phone. Sola notices but feigns ignorance. On the drive back to the office, she decides to open the message. “Hello darling, I hope you are fine. I am sorry about the last incident. I still love you and will always do”.

She breathes in and out before typing back a response. “How could you? Your intention was to kill me”.

She receives a response immediately. “I would never do anything to hurt you again. Please come to Ibadan this weekend and let’s talk”.

She puts her phone away without responding to the last message.

As Wale and Kunbi drive home from work on Friday evening, Kunbi thinks of how best to discuss her trip to Ibadan. “Wales, I have missed mummy and I want to see her this weekend”.

“Okay. I would like to see her as well. It’s been a while. We can do the trip together”.

“You want to go this weekend?” She asks.

“Yeah, do you have a problem with that?”

“No, no. I just thought you might be busy”.

He looks at her curiously. “Busy doing what?”

“I don’t know”. She shrugs.

“Kunbi, is there something I should know?”

“No, why do you ask?”

“Cos, you have never been good at lying. Why are you going to Ibadan this weekend?”

“I told you already. I want to see my mum”.

“And?” He asks expectant.

“And what?”

“Are you going to see Ola?”

Kunbi refuses to answer.

Wale looks at her and shakes his head. “Would you be satisfied when Ola kills or maims you?”

Kunbi opens her mouth to say something but decides against it. It was no use as she knew she could never convince Wale as far as Ola was concerned.
